  • Description

The Brazilian Air Force's Fumaca (smoke) Squadron, manned by eight stunt flying veteran officers, was started 17 years ago to attract young men into the Air Force.

It is the only one in the world to fly prop planes but on May 14 they will revert to jets, having received delivery of the first Fougat-Magisters specially adapted for them by the French manufacturers.

The planes flown in these sequences are North American T-6's, built in 1939 and with a top speed of only 250 kilometres an hour -- against the Fougat-Magister's 550 k.p.h.

The Squadron has exhibited its prowess in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia at the invitation of the governments of those countries.

They have racked up over 700 exhibitions in their 17 years of existence, with only four fatalities.
