Background: Two captured North Vietnamese tanks were put on display in Saigon last weekend (13-14 May). The tanks, both Soviet-made T-54s, were captured near the northern town of Quang Tri before it fell into communist hands.

Besides the tanks, an assortment of weapons seized in the six-week old North Vietnamese offensive was also exhibited. An area in the city centre was closed to traffic, and more than 1,000 people thronged a square in front of Saigon City Hall to get a closer look at the captured weaponry.

SYNOPSIS: In Saigon last weekend, a square in front of the city hall was closed to traffic so that two captured North Vietnamese tanks could be put on public display. The Soviet-made T-54s were captured near Quang Tri before the northern town fell in communist hands.

The exhibition quickly became the centre attraction in a city which, under martial law, is subject to a daily curfew, and has had all of its bars and restaurants closed.

In addition to the tanks, hundreds of Communist machine-guns, rifles, rocket launchers and other equipment seized in the six-week old North Vietnamese offensive were also on display.
