  • Description

A NEW WEST GERMAN TOWING CRAFT FOR WATER-SKIERS WAS DEMONSTRATED RECENTLY AT LUDWIGSHAFEN ON LAKE CONSTANCE. IT IS DRIVEN BY A REVOLUTIONARY "ROTATING-PISTON" ENGINE KNOWN AS THE WANKEL MOTOR, DEVELOPED DURING THE PAST SIX YEARS BY THE NSU MOTOR MANUFACTURERS.

THE BOAT-SHAPED CRAFT, HOUSING THE ENGINE, IS FITTED AT THE REAR WITH A HANDLE-BAR ARRANGEMENT CARRYING THE CONTROLS. GRIPPING THE CONTROLS, THE WATER-SKIER IS PULLED ALONG WHILE STEERING HIS OWN COURSE. FILM SHOWS MISS HEIDI BIBL, A GERMAN OLYMPIC SKIING CHAMPION, DURING TRIALS WITH THE NEW CRAFT.

TOP SPEEDS REACHED WERE JUST UNDER 30 MILES AN HOUR. THE PETROL CONSUMPTION RATE OF THE 150CC ENGINE IS ABOUT 28 MILES TO THE GALLON.

RUNNING ON LOW-OCTANE FUELS, THE ENGINE USES A TRIANGULAR, SHIELD-SHAPED PISTON ROTATING IN A FIGURE OF EIGHT MOTION AND PRODUCING A FOUR-STROKE EFFECT. IT IS CHEAP TO PRODUCE, LIGHT, SPACE-SAVING AND EXTREMELY RUGGED SINCE THERE ARE ONLY TWO MOVING PARTS - THE SINGLE ROTATING PISTON AND THE OUTPUT SHAFT. PROTOTYPES HAVE BEEN USED IN NSU MOTORCYCLES AND CARS.
