Background: Fourteen nations are presently taking part in the six-week International Trade Fair held in indonesia. The Fair was opened on the weekend (17 July) by Indonesian President Suharto in the capital city Djakarta, Cabinet ministers, diplomats and trade representatives were among the official guests who watched President Suharto declare the fair open in Merdeka Square.
The centre point of this year's fair is the striking A.S.E.A.N. (Association of South East Asian Nations) pavilion. A.S.E.A.N. members - Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines - have banded together for a joint display under one roof.
Also at the opening was a display of traditional dancing by some of the young people throughout the sprawling Indonesian archipelago.
More than three million people are expected to attend the fair which beasts 14 countries and 200 firms, an indication of Indonesian prosperity.
