  • Description

Evacuees from the fighting in Pakistan have included a planeload bound for Britain via the Arabian Gulf. After leaving the Gulf, however, doctors on board decided it would be wise for the seriously injured members not to continue on beyond Cyprus until further treatment could be given them. They included crew-members of a British merchant vessel caught in an Indian bombing raid over the harbour at Karachi earlier in the week. The aircraft was filmed on Sunday (12 December) unloading its wounded passengers at Nicosia.

SYNOPSIS: The first casualties from the British merchant vessel attacked by missiles in Karachi harbour during the past week, have been airlifted out of Pakistan with other evacuees.

After making a brief stop in the Arabian Gulf, the aircraft headed on towards Cyprus, on Sunday, but some of the wounded were found to be so ill that RAF doctors refused to allow them to fly on to London. Instead they stopped in Nicosia for further treatment.

Many of the evacuees had little but the clothes they wore. They felt the change in temperature after their flight from the Arabian Gulf.

The injured men were taken to the nearby United Nations hospital for surgical treatment....one had already undergone an emergency operation before leaving on the flight. In the airport building an emergency clearing station was organised by the British High Commissioner, and staffed by families of British diplomats and businessmen. Evacuees were assigned to hotels and private homes for the night, or booked on onward flights to Europe after documentation.
