  • Description

LORENZO BANDINI OF ITALY, DRIVING A FERRARI, AFTER A GRUELLING RACE IN WHICH ONLY EIGHT OF THE TWENTY STARTERS FINISHED.

BANDINI WON BY JUST OVER SIX SECONDS FROM AMERICAN RITCHIE GINTHER, IN A B.R.M. AVERAGING 159.65 KILOMETRES AN HOUR (99.20 M.P.H.) FOR THE 337.96 KILOMETRE (210 MILE) RACE ON THE BUMPY AIRFIELD CIRCUIT HERE.

THE FINAL PLACINGS DID NOT AFFECT THE WORLD DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE THE FIRST THREE - ALL BRITISH DRIVERS - GRAHAM HILL, JIM CLARK, AND JOHN SURTEES ALL DROPPED OUT DURING THE RACE. BANDINI IS NOW FIFTH IN THE TABLE.

AMERICAN DAN GURNEY IN A BRABHAM LED THE FIELD UNTIL DROPPING OUT WITH A BROKEN AXLE AFTER 45 LAPS. BANDINI THEN TOOK OVER AND FROM THEN ON NEVER LOOKED LIKE BEING BEATEN.

CLARK, THE 1963 WORLD CHAMPION AND CURRENTLY SECOND IN THE DRIVERS' TABLE, MADE A POOR START, BUT AFTER ELEVEN LAPS WORKED UP TO SECOND PLACE. BRILLIANT CORNERING ROUND THE SHARP U-BEND AT ONE END OF THE CIRCUIT ENABLED HIM TO CUT GURNEY'S LEAD TO 8.8 SECONDS, BUT THEN AFTER 38 LAPS HE HAD TO PULL OUT WITH A BROKEN HALF SHAFT.

BEFORE HE WENT OUT GURNEY SET A NEW LAP RECORD WITH A FASTEST LAP OF 1 MINUTE 10.56 SECONDS.

HILL, WHO LEADS CLARK BY TWO POINTS IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, WENT OUT WITH AN ELECTRICAL DEFECT AFTER ONLY FIVE LAPS. SURTEES ALSO WENT EARLY WITH SUSPENSION TROUBLE.

AFTER 57 LAPS, AMERICAN PHIL HILL, THE 1961 WORLD CHAMPION, HAD A LUCKY ESCAPE WHEN HIS COOPER-CLIMAX LEFT THE COURSE ON A CURB AND BURST INTO FLAMES. HOWEVER, HILL WAS ABLE TO GET OUT BEFORE THE BLAZE STARTED.

OFFICIAL RESULTS WERE, FIRST: BANDINI; SECOND: GINTHER; THIRD: ANDERSON (BRITAIN) IN A BRABHAM-CLIMAX; FOURTH: MAGS (SOUTH AFRICA) IN A B.R.M. FIFTH: INNES IRELAND (BRITAIN); AND SIXTH: JO BONNIER OF SWEDEN.
