  • Description

In an attempt to expand its timber exports beyond its traditional markets, Ghana has devoted the whole of its stand at the International Building Exhibition now being held in London, to the country's timber products.

For after cocoa, timber is the most important contributor towards Ghana's foreign exchange earnings. Forests cover half of the country and last year 708,984 tons of logs were exported to 24 countries.

In the past Ghana's timber has largely been sold to Italy, West Germany, Britain and the United States but new markets have been opening up in Japan and a number of African countries.

On Saturday (November 17) the Ghanaian Deputy High Commissioner in London Mr. J.V. Gbeho visited the exhibition and was shown around by Mr. Akrong, Administration Secretary of the Ghana Timber Marketing Board.

Ghana's timber industry, once concerned only with log exports and saw milling for home and export markets, now offers a wide range of processed woods for export. The country has seven veneer and plywood mills.
