  • Description

Chile held its first Municipal elections since President Salvador Allende became the world's first freely-elected Marxist Head-of-State last November. Heavy voting on Sunday (April 4), gave the President's United Popular Front coalition of Left-Wing parties a 50% of the total vote in 280 municipalities. This result has given him a far stronger hand for the establishment of a Socialist regime in Chile.

The main opposition christian Democrats - led by ex-resident Eduardo Frei - gained the largest single-party vote with 25% of the ballots.

The film was shot in Santiago, the Capital, and it is interesting to note that - although all citizens over 21 are eligible to vote - polling in segregated, the men and women voting in separate stations.

A heavy military guard was out to guard the polling booths - but no serious trouble was reported except in the Southern port of Puerto Aysen, where a leader of the Christian Democratic Youth Party died after a clash with youths outside the local Socialist Party Headquarters.
