  • Description

In the Malagasy Republic's capital of Tananarive, a week-long conference on tropical cyclones in the South West Indian Ocean has been taking place.

Organised by the World Meterological Organisation, the conference has been examining ways of reducing the damage caused by storms in this area of the Indian Ocean.

Representatives from the International Red Cross, France, The Comore Islands, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, the Malagasy Republic, Mauritius, The Seychelles, Reunion Island, the East African Community as well as delegates from the World Meterological Organisation have been attending the conference.

Tananarive, site of the conference, was itself struck by Cyclone "Eugenie" in February of this year. Fifty mile-an-hour (80 kph) winds buffeted the capital killing four children, while in outlying areas winds speeds reached more than eighty miles an hour (129 kph).
