    South Vietnamese Government forces have begun a major push against communist troops who overran outposts on the outer defence perimeter of Saigon.

    Under the cover of shelling and air strikes Government units of about 150 men moved from three directions on Monday (May 20) to try to alice through the communist position. A mixed North Vietnamese and Viet Cong force took the positions last week in a thrust down the Thi Tinh River. Communist suppers destroyed a bridge over the river and pressed on to Lake three Government outposts.

    Military sources in South Vietnam put the communist force at two regiments...about five thousand men.

    No casualty figures from either side have been announced.

    SYNOPSIS: A combined force of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers has made a major thrust at the outer defence perimeter of Saigon. a bridge over the Thi Tinh river was blown up and a number of troops from communist and government forces killed in the initial fighting.

    Government forces have moved out of Saigon to meet the communist advance. Units of about s-hundred-and-fifty men moved from three directions on Monday under the cover of artillery and air strikes. their main objective was to clear highways to outposts overrun by the communists.

    The advance was met by shelling from the communists.

    Neither side has admitted their casualties, bit fighting has been fierce. Latest reports say the battle has developed into an artillery duel concentrated about twenty-five miles north of Saigon.
