  • Description

CONCERNED AT THE RISING AMERICAN CASUALTY RATE IN SOUTH VIETNAM, U.S. MILITARY AUTHORITIES HAVE DEVELOPED THE UHL HELICOPTER INTO A "FLYING WEAPON PLATFORM" - BUT KNOWN TO CREWS AS A HUEY.

DURING THE BATTLE OF AP BAC IN JANUARY, A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF SLOW-MOVING H21 TROOP-CARRYING HELICOPTERS WERE SHOT DOWN BY THE VIET CONG. NEW, THE WELL-ARMED HUEYS WILL ACT AS ESCORTS. EACH OF THESE HELICOPTERS CARRIES ALMOST AS MUCH FIRE-POWER AS AN ARTILLERY BATTALION BARRAGE IN ITS SIXTEEN ROCKETS AND FOUR MACHINE GUNS. AS THE HEAVILY-ARMOURED HUEY DARTS ABOUT THE DROPPING-ZONE WHILE TROOPS ARE DISEMBARKED, THE CO-PILOT SCANS THE SURROUNDING AREA THROUGH REMOTE CONTROL SIGHTS.

THE USE OF HUEYS MARKS A CHANGE OF U.S. POLICY IN SOUTH VIETNAM. FORMERLY, U.S. HELICOPTERS WERE LIMITED TO RETURNING THE FIRE ONLY AFTER THE VIET CONG HAD BEGUN SHOOTING. NOW, UNDER NEW "RULES OF ENGAGEMENT", HUEYS ARE PERMITTED TO OPEN FIRE ON ANY "POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED" GUERILLAS WITHOUT WAITING TO BE FIRED ON FIRST.
