    KING BHUMIPOL AND QUEEN SIRIKIT OF THAILAND TOOK PART IN THE BUDDHIST CEREMONY OF PHAA PAA (FOREST CLOTH) IN BANGKOK ON THURSDAY.

    THE CEREMONY WAS HELD AT WAT PHRA CHETUPON, A 150-YEAR-OLD PAGODA. IT COMMEMORATES THE TRADITION THAT IN THE BUDDHA'S TIME FOLLOWERS WHO WISHED TO GIVE ROBES TO THE MONKS LAID THEM ON TREES NEAR TO WHERE THE MONKS LIVED. THE KING ANOINTED 84,000 YELLOW ROBES, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF THE BUDDHA'S TEACHING PRINCIPLES, AND DISTRIBUTED THEN TO MONKS.

    ONE OF THE MOST COLOURFUL PARTS OF THE CEREMONY WAS THE COVERING OF POTTED TREES WITH MONEY OFFERINGS.

    IN ALL THERE WERE 101 TREES AND EACH TREE WAS BEDECKED WITH ABOUT 10,000 BAHT (500 US DOLLARS OF GBP100).

    A LARGE NUMBER OF BUDDHIST FROM THROUGHOUT THAILAND AND ATTENDED THE CEREMONY, INCLUDING 101 HIGH-RANKING MONKS FROM THE THAI PROVINCE.
