  • Description

Soviet diplomats to the United States are reported over-crowded in their gray stone mansion Embassy on 16th Street in the heart of Washington, D.C.

The present Washington Embassy was owned and originally designed by multi-millionaire George Pullman. He made his fortune from luxurious railway cars that carry his name even today.

The present Embassy was bought originally by the Czarist government.

The Russians propose to move their quarters to a Washington suburb. They are reported to be negotiating for the purchase of a large home in upper-middle class Chevy Chase, Maryland, just outside Washington.

This estate is now owned by the heir to a department store fortune. The home is said to be priced at roughly half a million American dollars.

So far there has been little reaction among the Soviets' potential neighbours. One homeowned has indicated that he intends to inquire closely into the zoning regulations to see if they permit use of the home as an Embassy.
