    Top golfer Jack Nicklaus of the Unties States was in Japan recently to open the first of the two courses at the New St. Andrew's Golf Club in the Tochigi Prefecture.

    The course was named after Nicklaus, Known as the king of modern golf. The second course, opened a few days later, was modelled carefully by Nicklaus on the famous St. Andrew's course in Scotland -- the first golf course in the world.

    After the opening ceremony at the new clubhouse, Nicklaus played an opening round with another popular American golfer, Tom Weiskopf and the Japanese financier and owner of the course, Mr. Zenya Hamada.

    The Japanese are keen golfers. A Government-sponsored leisure committee has studied the rapid growth of the sport and estimates that by 1980, the Japanese will spend nearly GBP 1,268 million pounds sterling (about US 3,043 further 224 million pounds sterling (about US 537 million dollars) will go toward the cost of equipment.

    There are bout 800 courses in the country and another 800 are in the planning and construction stages.
