  • Description

India and Yugoslavia warned on Wednesday (20 October) that the East Pakistan crisis was likely to deteriorate, if a solution was not found shortly. A joint communique, issued as President Tito left after a four day visit, said that he and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had agreed on the need for a political solution, acceptable to the leaders of "East Bengal".

During his visit, President Tito held talks with several Indian government officials, including Mr Chavan, the Finance Minister, Foreign Minister Swaran Singh and Prime Minister Gandhi. Besides the Pakistan issue, the Yugoslav leader also discoursed the recent Indo-Soviet treaty and other topics of mutual interest, with the Indian government officials.

On Tuesday (19 October) in New Delhi, Prime Minister Gandhi held a luncheon party for President Tito and his wife. Guests included senior members of the Indian Cabinet, and their wives as well as other government officials.

SYNOPSIS: Yugoslavia's President Tito was the guest of honour at a luncheon given by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Yugoslav leader was on the third day of his official four-day visit.

President Tito was accompanied by his wife, Madame Jovanka Broze. Among guests invited to the luncheon were senior members of the Indian Cabinet and their wives, as well as several other leading government officials. This was President Tito's fifth visit to India since 1954. During his stay, Mr Tito had talks with several Indian government leaders, including Mrs Gandhi -- another firm believer in non-alignment.

Among topics discussed with Foreign Minister Swaran Singh and Finance Minister, Mr Chavan, were the recently signed Indo-Soviet treaty of peace, cooperation and friendship, the emergence of the People's Republic of China as a world power, and moves towards easier Sino-United States relations.

The primary topic of discussion between Mrs Gandhi and President Tito was the crisis in East Pakistan. The two leaders issued a joint communique on Wednesday, saying that the East Pakistan crisis was likely to deteriorate, if a solution was not found shortly.
