  • Description

Secretary-General U Thant is expected to return to his seated the United Nations on Monday (6 December) after hospital treatment for an ulcer. His age and indifferent health make it unlikely that he would be prepared to accept a further term of office after his present term ends on December 31.

Five candidates have so far been nominated -- Mr. Max Jakobson of Finland, Dr. Kurt Waldheim of Austria, Dr. Felipe Herrera of Chile, Mr. Shirley Amerasinghe of Ceylon and Mr. Endalkatchew Makonnen of Ethiopia.

To be successful, a candidate must be acceptable to the five permanent members of the security council. Already it seems apparent that Dr. Herrera is unacceptable to the United Stated.

A further difficulty is the recent accession to the United Nations of the People's Republic of China. Informed observers have suggested that China might prefer the choice to fall on a European.

This film features the two European contenders. Dr. Waldheim and Mr. Jakobson. Both are from countries with traditions of neutrality.

Dr. Waldheim was Foreign Minister on the former Austrian Conservative Government before resuming his post as Austrian ambassador to the United Nations.

Mr. Jakobson was a decisive supporter of Peking's claim to a seat. In his case the only complication is his status as a Jewish scholar for this reason, doubts have been cast on the support he could expect from Arab quarters.
