    Background: LAGOS, NIGERIA

There was pandemonium in Lagos port as thousands of almost destitute Ghanaians, desprate to beat the January 31 deadline for their expulsion from Nigeria, stormed two ships sent by the Ghanaian government to take them home. People fought to get on board as soon as the vessels docked in Lagos, just before midnight on January 31. Refugees scrambled up mooring ropes and clambered over containers put on the dockside to block their way. At least one person was drowned, but it is believed the figure could be as high as six. The heavily overcrowded ships left Lagos on February 1, leaving behind at least 4,000 Ghanaians who said they had no money to pay for food or for the journey home by road. Those people waiting on the dock had paid 77 dollars for passage on a ship to Ghana. Nigeria had given all unskilled and professional foreigners without legal right to work in the country two weeks to leave and most appear to have gone. There were believed to have been about two million illegal foreigners in Nigeria and about half of that number were Ghanaians. Most attempted to leave Nigeria by land through Benin and Togo, causing enormous congestion at borders.
