  • Description

The 29th United Nations General Assembly opened on a controversial note on Tuesday (17 September), with the new President, Algerian Foreign Minister M. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, demanding that all foreign troops, including British, be withdrawn from Cyprus.

Thirty-seven-years-old M. Bouteflika, one of the world's youngest Foreign Ministers, also urged the granting of self-determination to the people of Palestine.

And, in what appeared to be an allusion to the United States, M. Bouteflika also said "imperialist aggression has crept back slowly but certainly in South-East Asia."
    M. Bouteflika's election was unanimous in the secret ballot. He succeeds Ecuador's Dr. Leopoldo Benites as President.

The Assembly also unanimously elected Bangladesh, Grenada and Guinea-Bissau to U.N. membership....the world body now numbers 138 nations.

There are a record 113 items on the agenda for the current Assembly.
