    YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) STONE THROWING CROWDS BATTLED WITH POLICE WHO USED TEAR GAS AND STEEL-TIPPED BAMBOO CANES TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATORS.

    SEVENTY LEADERS OF OPPOSITION PARTIES, TRADE UNIONS AND STUDENT ORGANISATIONS WERE ARRESTED IN CALCUTTA DURING THE DAY UNDER THE PREVENTIVE DETENTION ACT, WHICH ALLOWS PEOPLE TO BE HELD IN JAIL WITHOUT TRIAL FOR UP TO SIX MONTHS.

    ALL MEETINGS AND PROCESSIONS HAVE BEEN BANNED BY THE NEW STATE GOVERNMENT, SWORN IN ON TUESDAY (21 NOV). THE COMMUNIST-DOMINATED UNITED FRONT ADMINISTRATION WAS DISMISSED AFTER IT REFUSED TO CALL A MEETING OF THE STATE ASSEMBLY BY DECEMBER 18 TO SHOW IT HAD A MAJORITY.

    A CALL FOR A GENERAL STRIKE SHUT DOWN SCHOOLS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICES YESTERDAY AND WITH BUSINESS PREMISES CLOSED NO TRAINS OR BUSES WERE RUNNING. TODAY THE UNITED FRONT ASKED ALL STRIKERS TO RETURN TO WORK TOMORROW (FRIDAY).

    MEANWHILE A CURFEW HAS BEEN CLAMPED ON 10 INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS OF THIS SPRAWLING WEST BENGAL STATE CAPITAL TO SEVEN MILLION PEOPLE. POLICE HAVE SO FAR MADE MORE THAN 350 ARRESTS.
