Background: Lebanese Druze chieftain Walid Jumblatt strongly criticised the rival right-wing Falangist Party on September 2, only one day after publicly offering condolences over the death of the party's leader, Pierre Gemayel. Gemayel, 78, had served in Lebanon's National Unity Government with Jumblatt before his death of a heart attack on August 29. The criticism came during a speech Jumblatt made in the Shouf Mountain town of Beit Ed Dine to mark the anniversary of the beginning of the war between his Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) and the Christian Falangist Party. Jumblatt referred to the party's members as the "the Falangists of Hatred", and said a security plan for the Shouf Mountains would be a waste of time. After the speech, he lit an eternal flame to the "martyrs of the mountains" the phrase used to describe Druze militiamen who have died in the fighting. The celebration was attended by a large number of locals, as well as several divisions of Druze militiamen, who marched into the town's main square carrying flags and rifles.
