Background: The butcher, the baker, the milkman, and many other folk in Putten, the Dutch market town of 6000 people, have flocked to a neighbouring forest and buried all the coins in their possession. This is no gay treasure hunt in reverse. Putten is a town gripped with fear since Radioactive" Joke Haanschoten and the six other members of her family were taken to a closely-guarded isolation hospital a week ago.

Joke is the four-year-old girl who was sent home from hospital with the head of a radium needle in her nose. Eventually she ejected the deadly "pearl" of radium and her father burned it on the kitchen stove. Later he tossed the cinders into the back garden -- and radioactive dust blew loose all over Putten.

It infected the house and the garden, and possibly Joke's mother and father and their other four children. So people who have been in contact with the Haanschoten family are burying money, those who have visited the house and garden are burning their shoes..........
Research workers are still engaged in and about the house trying to determine the degree of radioactivity present. It is now a silent house, with only family pictures and photographs to remind one of the once happyfamily who dwelt there.

Specially trained people from the A.B.C. service of the Dutch Navy, clad in special protective clothing are carrying out tests all over and within the house with geiger-counters. The stove, in which was burned Joke's vomit and the radium needle, responded strongly to the geiger test. The stove, and all other property with radioactive signs, will be filled with concrete and dumped in the sea.
