    At Abidjan-Sante, not far from the Ivory coast capital on Saturday (16 September), members of an ethnic group known as the Ebrie held their traditional Feast of the Generation.

    The Ebrie were driven from the area of what is now Ghana by wars in the 18th century. They settled along the side of a lagoon which became known as Ebrie lagoon. They founded what is now Abidjan.

    They built a whole string of villages and lived from fishing and handicrafts.

    Each year, the Ebrie hold the Feast of the generation, whose origin goes back to the days of war and flight from enemies. The ceremony includes war songs and dances and the symbolic handing over from one generation to the next of the responsibility for defending the villages.
