FRESH RACIAL VIOLENCE BROKE OUT IN KUALA LUMPUR AT THE WEEKEND, WHEN FIVE PEOPLE - REPORTED TO BE INDIANS - WERE KILLED AND HOUSES BURNED DURING INCIDENTS SAID TO HAVE BEEN PROVOKED BY A DRUNKEN BRAWL.

THE TROUBLE OCCURRED IN A TIN-MINING AREA OF THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL. INDIANS, WHO EMERGED RELATIVELY UNSCATHED FROM LAST MONTH'S RACE RIOTS, APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN THE TARGET FOR THE RENEWED VIOLENCE.

ACCORDING TO AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT, A 'CHAIN REACTION' WAS SPARKED OFF BY A DRUNKEN BRAWL. NEARBY PEOPLE PANICKED AND HOOLIGANS EXPLOITED THE SITUATION. SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE ASSAULTED AND HOUSES WERE SET ON FIRE.

YESTERDAY, (MONDAY), THE SITUATION WAS REPORTED TO BE UNDER CONTROL AS A STIFFER CURFEW IN SENSITIVE AREAS WAS ENFORCED. ALTHOUGH TENSION CONTINUED TO RUN HIGH, BUSINESS WAS NORMAL IN THE MARKET PLACE OF THE AFFECTED DISTRICT BUT SQUADS OF TROOPS AND RIOT POLICE KEPT A WATCHFUL EYE ON SHOPPERS.
