    Britain's Sarry Sheene on a Susuki won the British International Motorcycle Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday (11 August) with an average speed of 106.22 m.p.h. (170.94 k.p.h.) over the 20 laps.

    Sheene, from London's East End, also set a new lap record of one minute 37.8 seconds, a speed of 107.74 m.p.h. (172.32 k.p.h.). It was england's very first motor cycle Grand Prix.

    Sheene trailed in the early stages of the race as French Canadian Yvon Du Hamel built up an early lead. But the Canadian broke a crankshaft on his Yamaha on the second lap.

    Teuve Laneivouri of Finland took over a this point with Sheene in hot pursuit. It took the British rider three laps to overtake his rival, but from the moment to hit the front in his 750 cc works Susuki, Sheene began to ex???ne his lead and crossed the finishing line 10 seconds ahead of the pack.

    Lansivourit was second on a Yamaha, and Barry Ditchburn of Britain also on a Yamaha was third.

    It was a day of triumph for Barry Sheene. He earlier took the 500 cc race.
