  • Description

An Australian Air Force transport aircraft flew into Phnompenh yesterday (Thursday) with arms supplies for the Cambodian Army.

As American aircraft arrived with other supplies, the Australian C-130 Hercules discharged a load of wooden crates which were said to contain the first shipment of 3,000 Thompson sub-machine-guns promised under the latest Australian aid package.

The arrival of the shipment will help overcome the shortage of weapons for the Cambodian Army. Recruitment has outstripped gun supplies with the result that ten Cambodian battalions have no arms at all.

Australian aid to the present Cambodian regime - including earlier shipments of Landrovers (Jeeps) and field-radio sets - has ow reached two million Australian dollars.
