  • Description

INDIA'S RULING CONGRESS PARTY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) SUFFERED SHARP ELECTION SETBACKS, LOSING SOUTHERN KERALA STATE TO THE COMMUNISTS AND RECEIVING A CRUSHING REBUFF IN NEW DELHI.

IN RAJASTHAN STATE THE CONGRESS PARTY SUFFERED ANOTHER SETBACK WHEN THE INFORMATION MINISTER, RAJ BAHADUR, WAS DEFEATED BY THE MAHARAJAH OF BHARATPUR BY TEN-THOUSAND VOTES.

ANGRY CROWDS RAN RIOT IN BOMBAY, BURNING ELECTION POSTERS AND STONING VEHICLES DURING VOTING YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THE VIOLENCE OCCURRED IN NORTH EAST BOMBAY WHERE THE FORMER INDIAN DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. KRISHNA MENON IS SEEKING ELECTION AS AN INDEPENDENT. THE CROWD APPARENTLY SUSPECTED REGULARITIES WHEN THEY SAW SOME BALLOT BOXES IN A TAXI. THE BOXES WERE EMPTY, BUT VIOLENCE BROKE OUT WHEN POLICE INTERVENED.

WHEN COUNTING STOPPED AT MIDNIGHT IN BOMBAY, MR. MENON WAS 15-THOUSAND VOTES BEHIND HIS CONGRESS PARTY RIVAL. THE INDIAN MINISTER OF RAILWAYS, MR. SADASHIV PATIL WAS 14-THOUSAND VOTES BEHIND HIS SOCIALIST OPPONENT. THE COMMUNISTS WERE ALSO AMASSING LARGE LEADS.

THE COMMUNISTS REGAINED KERALA AFTER NINE YEARS. THEIR VICTORY WAS EXPECTED, BUT IT WAS OVERWHELMING WITH THE COMMUNISTS CAPTURING 100 OF 133 SEATS.

COUNTING IS STILL IN PROGRESS IN CALCUTTA, BUT THE CONGRESS PARTY IS TRAILING WELL BEHIND THE SOCIALISTS.
