INTRODUCTION: In Rhodesia 14 black civilians were killed and five others injured on Saturday (21 May) in a landmine explosion near the town of Bindura, about 40 miles (70 kilometres) northeast of Salisbury.

SYNOPSIS: A Rhodesian police officer who escorted newsmen to the scene said that the mine had been directed against the local population and not the security forces. The victims were in a truck on their way to a funeral when the mine exploded. It is believed to have been planted only minutes before the truck touched it off and the police officer said it had been boosted with extra explosive.

On Sunday (22 May) charred bodies were still lying in a four-foot (1.2 metre)-deep crater left by the blast. The truck's passengers had been told of the dangers of taking this particular route. According to the police spokesman guerrillas have recently been conducting a "campaign of terror" against the local people. He maintained that if the mine had been aimed at security forces it would have been placed nearer to one of their camps.
