Background: Guiner's talented folk singer, Sory Kandia Kouyate, was the star performer at a cultural concert held at the People's Palace, Conakry on Sunday (13 July) in honour of a visiting football delegation from Ghana.

The concert was in two parts. In the first, Sory Kandia Kouyate sang about the history of Africa while dancers in traditional costumes gave colour and movement to the scene. The second section consisted of an epic poem about the golden age of medieval Africa sung by Kouyate -- again with appropriate dances performed by the Guinea Ballet Dancers.

The Guinea Instrumental and Choral Ensemble provided the musical backing and played traditional instruments including tam-tams, flutes, castanets and a variety of African drums. The public address system and the lighting were the only foreign items in the show and the stage was dominated by a giant portrait of the founder of modern Guinea and President of the Republic, Ahmed Toure.
