  • Description

A large crowd turned out in Kuala Lumpur to see the start of the first Castrol-Wearne Asean Car Rally.

The Rally attracted a field of more than forty competitors who will race from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, a distance of more than 4,000 kilometres. The Rally is the first Asean rally ever organised.

One of the most favoured cars for the tough event was the Alfasud 1200. Each of the cars was specially fitted to withstand the heavy punishment of driving over one of the toughest rally routes in the world.

Before the Rally began the Malaysian Minister for Agriculture, Datuk Ali Hajiahmad, said the event would assist in showing the world the concept of Asean. He said the Rally would project Aean onto the international sporting scene. The cars are expected to cover the distance in about four days.
