  • Description

In Kinshasa, the Zaire government have signed a series of new agricultural, forestry and energy agreements with Canada. The agreements will lead to a five-year programme of training and economic assistance by the Canadians.

SYNOPSIS: The agreements were signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during an official visit to Zaire by a Canadian delegation, led by the Canadian Supply and Services Minister, Mr. Jean-Pierre Goyer. Mr. Goyer had talks with Zaire's State Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Umba di Lutete.

Mr. Goyer said that Canada would be investing 10 million dollars in Zaire over the next five years. The new agreements will help the exploitation of Zaire's forest areas, and the training of personnel to develop forestry production. Canadian experts are also expected to help form and train Zairian agricultural working parties.

The agreement is further evidence of increased international confidence in the Zaire economy, which has only recently begun to show signs of recovery. Zaire forms an important economic region in the centre of Africa, but the country is short of qualified personnel and investment. This latest agreement with Canada will help in both those areas.
