Background: Tennis -- and the holders of the Davis Cup, Sweden, were crushed by Italy in Rome on Friday (16 July) on the first day of their European B Zone semi-final game.
SYNOPSIS: Rolf Norberg, a Swedish team substitute, serving to Italian number one Adriano Panatta. He managed to win this point.
But Norberg, serving again for match point, had little hope of defeating Panatta, the current Italian and French Open Champion. He went down 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. This was despite Panatta's bandaged right arm because of a muscular ailment.
Kjell Johannsson, the Swedish team leader, in the absence of injured Wimbledon Champion Bjorn Borg, serving twice against Italian number two, Corrado Baruzzutti. Johannsson replaced the young Borg who scratched from the David Cup because of a strained stomach muscle that troubled him throughout the recent Wimbledon Championships.
The Swedish leader did better than his team mate, but Johannsson eventually went down to Baruzzutti 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2.
