  • Description

TWO THOUSAND NEW M-16 RIFLES WERE GIVEN THIS WEEK TO SOUTH VIETNAMESE RANGERS WHO MAN THE PERIMETER DEFENCE OF SAIGON.

THE HANDING OVER CEREMONY WAS HELD AT GIA DINH, NEAR SAIGON. IT WAS PRESIDED OVER BY GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND, COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN FORCES IN VIETNAM. GENERAL CAO VAN VIEN, CHAIRMAN OF VIETNAM'S JOINT GENERAL SATFF, RECEIVED THE RIFLES.

GENERAL WESTMORELAND DESCRIBED THE M-16 AS "THE MOST MODERN SHOULDER WEAPON IN THE WORLD TODAY."
THE RIFLES WERE THE "A-I" MODELS, COMPLETE WITH MODIFICATIONS MADE IN RECENT MONTHS AFTER REPEATED TROUBLE WITH THE CONTROVERSAL RIFLE JAMMING IN BATTLE. NOT ALL AMERICAN UNITS HAVE THE NEW WEAPONS.

SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS ALONG THE DEMILITARISED ZONE AND AROUND SAIGON ARE THE ONLY ONES WITH THE M-16.
