    INTRODUCTION: Thousands of school children and members of voluntary organisations paraded throughout Ghana on Monday (7 March) as part of the celebrations to mark the country's 20th anniversary of independence.

    SYNOPSIS: In the capital, Accra, the Commissioner for Education and Culture, Mr E. Owusu-Fordwough attended the celebrations in Independence Square. He took thee salute at the march past of contingents of Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and school children.

    In a speech, the Commissioner urged the participants to resolve by word and action to bring honour and glory to Ghana. He said the behaviour of some members of the younger generation left a loft to be desired. He appealed to the children to show a good example. The Commissioner also urged them to cultivate unity and therefore work for the progress of Ghana.

    The country's head of state, General Ignatius Acheampong promoted members of the Ruling Supreme Military Council to mark the anniversary. His government's currently fighting severe inflation, but over the past 20 years Ghana's standard of living has become one of the highest in West Africa.
