    OVER 250,000 PEOPLE LINED THE STREETS OF ANKARA YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE FUNERAL OF FORMER TURKISH PRESIDENT CEMAL GURSEL, WHO DIED ON SEPTEMBER 14.

    THE FOUR HOUR CEREMONY INCLUDED A MILITARY MARCH PAST THE COFFIN, WHICH WAS BROUGHT FROM THE TURKISH PARLIAMENT BUILDING. THE FORMER PRESIDENT HAD BEEN LYING IN STATE SINCE HIS DEATH AT THE AGE OF 70. GENERAL GURSEL HAD SUFFERED TWO STROKES WHILE UNDERGOING MEDICAL TREATMENT IN WASHINGTON EARLIER THIS YEAR. HE WAS FLOWN BACK TO ANKARA ON MARCH 29, BUT REMAINED IN A COMA. HE CAME TO POWER IN MARCH 1960 WHEN HE LED A BLOODLESS COUP AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT OF ADNAN MENDERES.

    ADMIRAL AND GENERAL PLACED THE FORMER PRESIDENT'S COFFIN INTO A GRAVE AT THE FREEDOM CEMETERY. AMONG THOSE ATTENDING THE FUNERAL WERE PRESIDENT CEVDET SUNAY -- ELECTED IN MARCH WHEN GENERAL GURSEL WAS TOO ILL TO CARRY ON - AND PRIME MINISTER SULEYMAN DEMIREL.
