  • Description

From the balcony of his Taipei headquarters, President Chiang Kai-shek of Nationalist China, addressed a 200,000 strong rally, October 10 --- to celebrate Formosa's 48th National Day - "The Double Tenth". (the tenth day of the tenth month) The celebrations mark the 1911 revolution which ended more than 4,600 years of imperial rule in China.

In front of the Presidential mansion, people cheered loudly as the President and his wife appeared on the balcony. After his speech, the crowds rallied into a mass parade, headed by the Navy brass band. Winding through the streets, groups carried placards and rode on gaily-decorated vehicles.

For the first time, the Nationalist Chinese air force gave an acrobatic display. More than 40,000 spectators stood beneath the city's newly-constructed Chung Hsing Bridge, as the planes roared overhead in spectacular formations.

In a statement issued after the celebrations, President Chiang predicted that Nationalists would wipe out Communist regime on the mainland, and restore China's position as a free independent country. "Next year, our task will be to rid the mainland of Communists, he said. He envisaged an uprising against the Peking Regime, coupled with a military offensive from Formosa, and declared he was determined personally to lead the attack.

At a recent mass military review in Peking, the Communist Chinese Defence Ministry maintained its demand of "right to liberate" Formosa and the off-shore islands. Shortly after, reports said "Nationalist Commandos" had landed on the mainland to plant the flag of "Free China" in Communist soil; the troops then withdrew.
