  • Description

Ceylon's new parliament opened in Colombo on Sunday (14 June) with a Government pledge to turn the island state into a republic and a leftward swing in foreign policy.

In the traditional speech from the throne road by Governor General William Gopallawa, the Ceylon Government announced it was suspending diplomatic relations with Israel until the Israelis yield captured Arab soil or reach a settlement the Arabs accept. Ceylon will recognise the governments of North Korea, East Germany, North Vietnam and the Viet Cong Provisional Revolutionary Government in South Vietnam.

The leftist coalition of 54-year-old Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike swept into power in last month's general election and has decided to nationalise banks and the country's retail trade. Ceylon, which is at present a monarchy within the British Commonwealth, will be ruled under a republican constitution.
