    Japan's special envoy to Israel, Mr. Kenji Fukunaga, called on Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir at her office in Jerusalem on Sunday (June 4th) to officially express the nation's apologies over the Lod Airport massacre by three young japanese radicals.

    Mr. Fukunaga carried to Mrs Meir a personal message of apology and condolence from Prime Minister Sato.

    The senior Japanese Dietman told Mrs Meir that Japan will pay a "substantial" token amount of money to the families of those killed or injured in the airport attack.

    During the 45-minute meeting, Mr. Fukunaga expressed his government's "deep sorrow" for the attack and said it had no plans to extradite the lone survivor, Kozo Okamoto.

    The special envoy later visited Israeli President Zalaman Shazar in his office for 20 minutes and then called at the Knesset (Parliament) to express apologies over the incident.
