    SKI-FLYING DIFFERS FROM SKI-JUMPING IN THAT A MUCH STEEPER SLOPE IS USED. THERE ARE ONLY THREE SKI-FLYING HILLS IN EUROPE: ONE AT OBERSTDORF, THE OTHER TWO AT PLANICA IN YUGOSLAVIA AND KULM IN AUSTRIA. THE CONTEST IS DECIDED STRICTLY ON THE DISTANCE COVERED BY THE SKIERS -- NO POINTS ARE AWARDED FOR STYLE. WHEN A SKIER JUMPS OFF HE MAY BE TRAVELLING AS FAST AS 78 M.P.H. (126 KM.P.H.)
    ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP (FRIDAY), THE 26 YEAR OLD SWEDISH JUMPER, KJELL SJOEBERG EQUALLED THE WORLD SKI-FLYING RECORD WITH A LEAP OF 462 FEET 7 INCHES. HE SHARES THE RECORD WITH YUGOSLAVIA'S JOSE SLIBER, AND EAST GERMANY'S PETER LESSER.
