    British Government offices in North America are on the alert after a letter bomb exploded in the British Embassy in Washington on Monday (August 27) and blew off the left hand of a secretary.

    The bomb thought to have a British postmark, is similar to those discovered in London which British police believe to be the work of the Provisional I.R.A
    The victim of the bomb was an Irish born Catholic Mrs. Nora Murray.

    She is reported to be calm and resting comfortably after surgery to her right hand. There was damage to the thumb and index finger as well as the skin.

    The letter was addressed to Brigadier Giles Mills the former British Military attache at the embassy. Mrs. Murray works for his successor Brigadier Henry Woods.

    Last Saturday (August 25) and employee of the Bank of England lost a hand when a letter bomb exploded.
