  • Description

Hundreds of people have been drowned and hundreds of thousands are homeless as a result of Bangladesh's worst floods in memory.

Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has put his armed forces on alert for a massive ???escue operation as relief organisation reported thousands of people trapped in the north east of the country virtually standing in waist deep water.

But the rescue work has been hampered by washed out rail and road links and the Bangladesh Air Force has been handicapped in their airdrops of food by a lack of dry spots where the drops could be made.

One Dacca newspaper puts the death toll so far at 500.

On Saturday (August 3) flood waters entered the capital Dacca. Officials said floods waters in the Habiganj area were still rising and some two million marooned people must be lifted to safety.

On Friday (August 2) a Government spokesman said some 19,000 square miles (about 49,000 square kms) of the country were submerged and approximately 200 million sterling (480 million US dollars) damage caused by the floods. Cholera is also reported to have broken out in some areas. The Bangladesh Prime Minister flew over flooded areas of the country on Sunday (August 4).
