  • Description

President Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian leader, presided over a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Cairo on Saturday (5 May). The meeting was to discuss the nation's internal affairs and followed the speeches by President Sadat on May Day and that by Deputy Premier Dr Abdel Kader Hatem a few days before in which both men stressed the effort and sacrifice that had to be made to achieve victory over Israel.

President Sadat in his May Day address to thousands of workers at the textile town of Mehalla el Kobra, told them that no sacrifice was too heavy in order to achieve victory over Israel. He told them that the recent Israeli commando attacks on Lebanon were "an infringement of the honour of all Arabs".

A few days prior to the President's rallying speech, Deputy Premier Dr. Hatem had told Egypt's People's Assembly that a programme of home building, improved living standards, and immediate steps to end food, transport and consumer goods shortages, would not in any way deter the country's determination to give up any territory to Israel.

Attending Saturday's meeting were General Ahmed Ismail, Mamdouh Salem, Abdel Aziz Higazy and Abdel Aziz Kamel.

SYNOPSIS: General Ahmed Ismail, Egyptian War Minister. The General recently said that when battle with Israel began, Arab wealth would have a vital role. Qualifying this in a speech to Parliament the same day, Deputy Premier Abdel Hatem, revealed plans for improved living standards but reaffirmed Egypt's determination not to give up any territory to Israel. President Sadat had clear confirmation that the Egyptian people were ready to fight when he addressed several thousand textile workers on May Day.

The co-operation of Arab military strengths was recently emphasised at a meeting of military chiefs of the Arab League at which the call was for all-our war with Israel.
