INTRODUCTION: The African Champion Club Cup....and in their first leg match in Niger, the Olympic Club of Niamey had difficult opposition in the form of Libya's sophisticated El Medina side.
SYNOPSIS: The Libyans, in the white shirts, kicked off and started pushing the ball around with arrogant calm. At the start they were bustled off the ball by the home side's greater sense of urgency, but El Medina seemed to sense they could have trouble if they underestimated their opponents. They started searching for the important first goal in earnest, but the safe hands of the Olympic goalkeeper thwarted this attack.
The Libyans managed to open the scoring with only a few minutes gone but they relaxed too soon, and Olympic equalised in the 17th minute when this bad mistake by the Libyan goalkeeper let in Diasse. The goal delighted the home crowd, and the score stayed at 1-1 until half time.
In the second half, Olympic kept looking for a goal to put them ahead and give an advantage to defend when they travel to Libya for the second leg.
But El Medina had no intention of playing a defensive game and were always aware they could retake the lead with a swift counter-attack.
And they did exactly that with this simple textbook goal from a low cross behind the defence. Moustapha was the scorer.
The goal silenced the home crowd and for a quarter of an hour El Medina were definitely on top. The Libyans' probing passes exposed gaping holes in the Olympic defence and Moustapha, the scorer of the second goal, added this equally easy one in the 66th minute -- 3-1 to El Medina.
Libya were dominating the match at this stage and number nine Abou-Bakre took his chance well to put Libya 4-1 up five minutes later.
Olympic Nostar N'Diaye reduced the Libyan lead to 4-2 with only a minute to go, but the score stayed at 4-2 and Olympic's chance of staying in the African Champions Cup must now be very slim.
