  • Description

A BBC technicians' strike, which blacked out television screens for two days, and hit both domestic and overseas radio services, ended at midnight on Friday (22 December).

SYNOPSIS: At the height of the strike, the technicians picketed BBC's Television Centre in West London, taking a close look at all vehicles entering the compound.

The strikers also picketed Bush House, one of the BBC's major radio buildings in central London. They went on strike to press their demands for pay parity with their colleagues in independent radio and television. But the corporation is under pressure to obey the government's five percent guidelines for current pay increases.

The film, 'The Sound of Music', for which the BBC paid two and a half million pounds (five million dollars), was one show it said its management staff would transmit if the strike had continued through the Christmas holidays. The BBC said the technicians decided to go back to work following agreement on an interim pay award.
