    Cuban Premier Fidel Castro arrived in Algiers on Friday (12 March) for his third visit to Algeria.

    Dr. Castro said he was in Algiers primarily for talks with President Houari Boumedienne, whom he considered one of the great leaders of the modern world.

    The duration of the visit has not been announced. The Cuban leader made a 16 day visit to Algeria in 1972 and returned for the non-aligned summit in 1973.

    President Boumedienne visited Cuba in 1974.

    Asked for his view of the confrontation between Algeria and Morocco over the Western Sahara, Dr. Castro said Cuba had been represented on the United Nations mission to the territory last year which had consulted the population on their wishes.

    He said Cuba was in favour of autodetermination and considered there was an absolute majority among the Saharans for self-determination.
