Background: The World Surfboard Riding Championships were held recently at Lorne Beach near Melbourne. The winner of the Men's Championship was Ralph Arness of the U.S.A.

The Championships were held at Bell's Beach, Victoria to begin with but poor surf postponed the finals for seven days, and finally they were moved to Lorne beach, near Melbourne. From an original entry of 82, the semi-finalists included surfers from Hawaii, U.S.A., U.K., South Africa and Australia.

The winner of the Men's Championship was 18-year-old Ralph Arness (U.S.A.) the son of American actor James Arness (Matt Dillon in `Gunsmoke'). Second was the former World Champion Bernard Farrelly (Australia) and third was the current Australian Men's Champion Peter Drouyn. The Women's title was won by Sharon Weber from Hawaii.
