THE ARMY, NAVY AND AIR FORCE UNITS FROM ALL STATES TOOK PART IN THE EXERCISE, HELD AT JERVIS BAY, ON THE SOUTH COAST OF NEW SOUTH WALES.

MONTHS OF PLANNING HAD GONE INTO MOBILISING NEARLY TWO THOUSAND VEHICLES AND SIX-THOUSAND MEMBER OF THE THREE ARMED SERVICES. THEY WERE TO FIGHT A MOCK BATTLE UNDER CONDITIONS SIMILAR TO SOUTH-EAST ASIA.

MISSING FROM THE OPERATION WAS THE TROPICAL HEAT OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA, BUT IN THE DENSE BUSH, ENEMY SNIPERS LAID IN WAIT FOR UNSUSPECTING MOBILE PATROLS.

EVEN A FULL SCALE TENT HOSPITAL, CAPABLE OF HANDLING MAJOR SURGERY, WAS INSTALLED AS PART OF THE OPERATION. THERE WERE NO BATTLE CASUALTIES AS SUCH, BUT PLENTY OF ACCIDENT VICTIMS AND GENERAL SICKNESS TO FILL THE HOSPITAL'S 50 BEDS.

ARMY DUCKS AND OTHER AMPHIBIOUS LANDING CRAFT KEPT THE SUPPLY LINES OPEN, WHILE A SO-CALLED "ENEMY" FORCE OF 300 MEN LAUNCHED A SERIES OF HIT-RUN ATTACKS ON THE INVADERS. THE ARMY MINISTER, DOCTOR FORBES, HEADED OFFICIAL OBSERVERS DURING THE MANOEUVRES. HE KEPT A CLOSE CHECK ON THE MANY PHASES OF OPERATION LONGSHOT.
