  • Description

BRITAIN'S ANN JONES PLAYED A PERFECT SLOW-BALL GAME TO WEAR DOWN NANCY RICHEY OF THE UNITED STATES IN THE WOMEN'S SINGLES FINAL IN PARIS TODAY (SUNDAY) TO WIN 6-3, 6-1.

THE 21 YEAR OLD AUSTRALIAN TONY ROCHE, AFTER HAVING A PAIN-KILLING INJECTION FOR A BADLY SPRAINED ANKLE, HAMMERED 34 YEAR OLD HUNGARIAN ISTVAN GULYAS IN STRAIGHT SETS TO WIN THE MEN'S SINGLES FINAL 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.

IN THE WOMEN'S SINGLES, ANN JONES OCCASIONALLY VENTURED TOWARDS THE NET AND USUALLY LOST THE POINT BUT WHEN SHE STAYED ON THE BASELINE HER CONTROL AND ACCURACY WAS TOO MUCH FOR AMERICA'S NANCY RICHEY. ANN JONES HAS NOW WON THE WORLD'S TWO MAJOR HARD-COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LESS THAN A MONTH - SHE CAPTURED THE ITALIAN TITLE IN ROME LAST MONTH.

TONY ROCHE DAMAGED HIS ANKLE IN A DOUBLES MATCH ON FRIDAY NIGHT. HE HAD AN INJECTION AND THE ANKLE STRAPPED AN HOUR BEFORE HIS FINAL - AFTER A SHORT PRACTICE HE DECIDED TO GO AHEAD WITH THE MATCH AND GAVE A MASTERLY PERFORMANCE TO BEAT WILY GULYAS. TONY ROCHE, LIKE ANN JONES, WON THE ITALIAN TITLE IN ROME LAST MONTH.
