  • Description

PRESIDENT ELECT RICHARD NIXON YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) PLEDGED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN THE UNITED NATIONS. HE WAS SPEAKING AT THE UNITED NATIONS BUILDING AFTER A MEETING IN THE LATE AFTERNOON WITH SECRETARY GENERAL U THANT.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME OR ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED NATIONS THAT A PRESIDENT ELECT HAS VISITED THE UNITED NATIONS BEFORE HIS INAUGURATION. AND I'M HONOURED TO BE HERE AND I PARTICULARLY WANTED TO COME HERE WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE DESIGNATE MR. RODGERS SO THAT BY THIS VISIT WE COULD INDICATE OUR CONTINUING SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND OUR INTENTION IN THESE YEARS AHEAD TO DO EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN AND TO STRENGTHEN THIS ORGANISATION AS IT WORKS IN THE CAUSE OF PEACE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. WE HAD A GOOD BRIEFING FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL AND MEMBERS OF HIS STAFF ON A NUMBER OF THE UNITED NATIONS ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NOT IN THE HEADLINES - NOT THE POLITICAL ACTIVITIES BUT THE ECONOMIC AND OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT ARE TREMENDOUSLY EXCITING AND IN WHICH THERE IS GENERAL AGREEMENT AMONG THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS, IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION FOR EXAMPLE, THE FIELD OF HELP AND OTHERS. IT'S THIS SIDE OF THE UNITED NATIONS STORY THAT NEEDS BETTER TO BE KNOWN IN AMERICA AND ROUND THE WORLD AND I WAS GLAD TO GET SUCH AN ENCOURAGING REPORT ON THOSE ACTIVITIES. THANK YOU VERY MUCH."
