WHAT STARTED A FEW DAYS AGO AS PEACEFUL OCCUPATION OF AN EMPTY LONDON BUILDING BY A GROUP OF HOMELESS HIPPIES FLARED TODAY (SATURDAY) INTO UGLY VIOLENCE AS POLICE CLASHED WITH GROUPS OF THE 800 YOUNGSTERS WHO NOW OCCUPY THE HOUSE.

NUMBER 144 PICCADILLY HAS BEEN DECLARED A FORTRESS BY THE HIPPIES FOLLOWING AN EVICTION NOTICE WHICH THEY REFUSE TO ACCEPT. THEY ARE RECRUITING MORE NUMBERS, AND HOPE EVENTUALLY TO HAVE NEARLY 1500 HIPPIES AND OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE TO PREVENT THE HOUSE BEING OCCUPIED BY ITS NEW AND OFFICIAL OWNER.

TODAY IT WAS RELATIVELY CALM AT NUMBER 144 FOLLOWING A NIGHT OF UGLY CLASHED BETWEEN POLICE AND MOBS OF HIPPIES WHO RAN DOWN THE MAKESHIFT DRAWBRIDGE OF THE BARRICADED BUILDING IN ATTACKING WAVES. FROM UPSTAIRS WINDOWS, OTHER YOUNGSTERS HURLED DOWN SOME OF THE 40,000 HARD, PLASTIC BALLS THEY HAVE COLLECTED AS DEFENSIVE AMMUNITION. AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED AND TREATED AT HOSPITAL.

BEARDED HIPPY LEADER "DOCTOR JOHN" MOFFAT TOLD AN IMPROMPTU PRESS CONFERENCE THAT THE SQUATTERS, WHO HAVE CALLED THEMSELVES THE 'LONDON STREET COMMUNE', HAVE NO INTENTION OF MOVING VOLUNTARILY FROM NUMBER 144 PICCADILLY. IN FACET THEY PLAN, HE SAID, TO TAKE OVER OTHER LONDON BUILDINGS.

HE DENIED THE HIPPIES HAD PETROL BOMBS, BUT ADDED THAT THEY WERE EASY ENOUGH TO MAKE IF THEY WERE NEEDED.

THE PICCADILLY SQUATTERS HAVE LITTLE SYMPATHY FROM THE BRITISH PRESS AND PUBLIC, AND THERE IS GROWING ANGER OVER THE WAY THEY ARE DRAWING ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE NEEDY FAMILIES WHO ARE GENUINELY HOMELESS.

"DR. JOHN" SAYS HIS HIPPY ARMY IS SICK OF BEING MOVED FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE BY THE POLICE. HE AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE DEFYING THE COURT EVICTION ORDER IN THE AIM OF SETTING UP A CENTRE AT NUMBER 144 TO INVESTIGATE YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS LIKE DUG ADDICTION AND UNEMPLOYMENT. M.P.'s ARE PREPARING, HOWEVER, TO PRESENT A STRONG DEMAND TO HOME SECRETARY JAMES CALLAGHAN, THAT THE SQUATTERS BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY ... BY FORCE IF NECESSARY.
