  • Description

Within hours of his arrival in Moscow, Angolan President Agostinho Neto began talks with Communist Party Chief Leonid Brezhnev and other Kremlin leaders.

SYNOPSIS: The Angolan President arrived in Moscow on thursday (7 October) to a ceremonial welcome at the airport. He was met by the Chairman of the Soviet Party Presidium Nikolai Podgorny and Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko.

It was the first visit to the Soviet Union by President Neto since Angola gained independence from Portugal last year. Soviet economic and military aid as well as the tense situation in southern Africa were among he main topics he was due to discuss with Kremlin officials. The Angolan leader, whose Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, the MPLA, was helped to victory by Soviet arms in the civil war in his country, was accompanied by his Foreign Minister Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

President Neto was one of five African leaders who met in Lusaka last month to discuss settlement proposals outlined by Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith. Moscow condemned the United States initiative on the Rhodesian issue as an attempt to prop up racialist regimes in southern Africa.
